Stress! Not Just for Adults Anymore!Stressed? Got Kids home from school? THIS is the perfect time to try Zentangle®!

I an effort to try and help in the only way I know how - I am making my Zentangle for Kidz! book available right here for download:

I just ask a few things:
1. Please don't be a jerk and do something like... try and sell this book online.
2. I'd LOVE to see the Zentangles that you and your kids create!
Send me a jpeg and I'll post it here on the site for others to see.
Let me know if there is a story to go with it too.
3. If you want a physical copy of the book (with stickers!!) you can get it at my shop - BUMBLEBAT
4. Have fun!!

And since I know that there are some very curious folks out there who might be interested in drawing comics or illustrating books - I thought you'd like to see the "sketch" version of the book?

This is how I figured out what I wanted to be in the book and how it should look...
If you have been thinking about it - or maybe had no idea I was even doing this... I strongly encourage you to go check it out and make a decision. ASAP.

Even at the lowest pledge level ($25), you will get access to the blog that will follow me through Cartoon School. You will learn all kinds of cool, artsy things right along with me. After the Kickstarter is over, I will offer access to the blog through my Etsy shop, but it will be more than $25. (So it's a good deal too!)

The way Kickstarter works is - the project must meet the funding goal by this FRIDAY! or I don't get any of the money that has been pledged. Which also means that no one gets their rewards. Agh! And I have already started making up the cool little boxes of Goodies!!
BTW - their are only 9 more of those available!

If you haven't had a chance to look at the project, but are curious what kinds of cool things you might get... I will list them all here for your convenience!

You: "What's in it for me?"

Me: You get the experience of going to Cartoon School without the stress, sleepless nights, spilled ink, and lack of talent!

You: "Cool. But what do I get?"

I expect to have these mailed out in September or October, depending on how many there are. (Only a few left!)

$150 - STUDIOMATES will join me for a monthly blog "Open Studio". You can submit your questions, art problems, thoughts... throughout the month, and I'll do my best to answer as many as I can on the blog. I am hoping for 9 blog Open Studios (school year is Sep.-May).

$200 - STUDIOMATES... with GOODIES will join me for a monthly blog "Open Studio" AND I'll send you a little box stuffed with Stuff! This box of stuff may have some additional special Goodies... oh, say, maybe an original, vintage AlphaTangle book, or a print, or...?

$250 - STUDIOMATE V.I.P.s can take part in the Open Studio each month. V.I.P.s will also get 1 hour of my undivided attention - through FaceTime or through emails. I'll be your creativity coach, Zentangle guru, or encouraging elementary art teacher. Whatever you are struggling with - from publishing questions to how to shade your piece of art to brainstorming your craft room layout. I'll spill my thoughts, sketch, or even shoot a video if you need the visual help. Need an open mind to share a "crazy" ("cool, unusual...") idea? I'll listen. [Note: this is one hour total, not one hour every month. However, you could break it up into shorter sessions- like having "Sandy-on-call." ] You have until the end of April 2016 to use your hour. And yes, it is perfectly ok to ask a question "for a friend."

$250 - CARTOON YOU - I'll create a cartoon avatar of you! Use it for social media or on your calling cards (any non-commercial use). You can decide if you want a full figure or just head and shoulders. Send me at least 4 clear photos and let the fun begin! The final image will be sent to you as a jpeg, so no postage is necessary.

$250 - SHAMELESS PLUG - I'll put an ad/link for you, your business, or your product on the blog. Creativity is welcome! The ad will stay on the blog until May 2016.

$650 - The SHAMELESS PUG really likes you! I'll put an ad/link for you AND I'll review your product (book, website, whatever you like) on the blog AND I'll include it (the product) or you, in a comic strip, and post it on the blog. [Note: for reviews, I'll need a sample of the item. I'd particularly love to "review" a new iMac, a large format scanner, and a fuel efficient car!] You have until March 2016 to claim your Pug.

$3,000 - BACKSTAGE PASS - At this level, you are a very good friend, close family... or a stalker. Either way, you can't stay at my apartment! But, I will put you up at The Hotel Coolidge (good example of a Shameless Plug!), for a night. I'll take you out for lunch - BBQ? Turkish? Food co-op? And then I'll show you behind the scenes at the Cartoon School! You'll get to see the studios and such rarities as the kind-of-creepy-but super-cool cartoon graffiti bathroom! That's not for kids though. Some of those drawings bring new meaning to "bathroom humor"! ...And other exciting sites. I'll also give you a Cartoon School tote bag or some other memento of the lovely day. And, depending on the day you visit - you may get to attend other intriguing events, like a film night or a visiting artist lecture. And yes, you can bring a friend, spouse, or kid. Or two. But not two spouses. That's just wrong. You have until May 2016 to use your reward. This level also has Studiomate status so you can take part in the blog Open Studios.

$4,000 - The COLLECTOR - You just KNOW that someday my art will be famous, right? Especially with all the skills I will learn at Cartoon School! You can start your collection while my art is still affordable. ;-) You will get an original, fabulous, framed piece of my Zentangle art! This piece uses black, brown and sepia inks as well as white chalk - on handmade lokta paper. It is professionally framed. Big and impressive! Just the way art should be. It might even match your sofa.

The Baron is not included. He is a character from my rubber stamp line, and volunteered to help show scale.

Here is a close up of the piece:
So those are the amazing rewards you can get for backing my Glyphs & Glitches project! I added a few of these as requests - so if you have an idea for a reward that you want to see - and are willing to back... let me know real quick as there are only a few days left!

She also told me about a few blog posts she had written about the ebook and gave me permission to share them with you. I just wrote a post on my BeezInTheBelfry blog with the first two posts, but thought this one might really appeal to all you Lilah Bean fans and kids!

So here are Chelsea's great ideas!

More Ebooks and Tangle Cards

Hello again. I seem to be on a roll. Well, first let me say that this is
all Ms Bartholomew's fault. If it weren't for her and her talent, I
would not be so inspired to spend so much time playing with zentangle
and especially her lovely little Lilah Beans! That being said, I had way
too much fun creating my Christmas cards this year. I decided to extend
the fun and once inspired it was hard to stop. I ended up making a
total of 6 different designs staring the Lilah Beans. You can now find
these cards as printable PDF's on my Esty shop CraftyStx.

So
the first cards I made were the trees. They were so cute. I couldn't
resist. I played with the idea on them for a bit. The Merry and Bright
card was bothering me. The original was just missing something. I
couldn't quite put my finger on it but it kept me awake one night. Then
it hit me, an easy fix would be to modify the lettering some and maybe
add a Lilah Bean or a present beneath the tree. The finsihed result was
much more to my liking.

The
second cards were the Feliz Navidad and the little Bean hopping out of
the present. This was just too much fun to do. They naturally lend
themselves to mischievousness and hijinks. But I didn't stop there...

The
last set of cards was the Welcome Santa and the Season's Greetings.
Once I got started on the little guys wearing hard hats, it was only
natural to take a look at them wearing elf hats and reindeer antlers.
And the little guy wearing the antlers would not be pleased. Who would
want to pull that sleigh?

The next step was
learning my printer. I am so technologically challenged. I only have an
ipad and my latest addition was an epson printer. And our internet here
is goofy so suffice to say I have to go offline and use a wireless
nettwork that isnt' actually hooked up to a network in order to connect
the printer to the ipad. Whew, and once all that is done I spent some
time learning to scan with the epson app. I printed a black and white
copy of my cards to play with on cardstock.

My daughter Lilah visited the classroom every chance she got and spent a lot of time working on her own comics ideas. I posted about our experiences on my Beez In the Belfry blog. Here are links if you would like to read about it:

And this is a Lilah Bean comic that uses a "Mad Libs" technique. I had to create a comic that took place in a cave with my character getting arrested for laughing... and saved by a smiling cat.

Looks like my comic-camp-adventure had an influence on some of my readers! We received this wonderful Lilah Bean comic from Mia Bonet (daughter of CZT, Elizabeth Bonet)
Deep in space on a space...

island, Lila

Beans dance!

(spinning)

Their dance ends...

so they leave their space island...

so they can dance for others too!

My daughter, Lilah, decided to respond with her own comic...

Once there were four Lilah Beans - Leo, Boby, Ecy, and Mia...

They were acrobats!

One day they all went to a museum...

Mia went to the bees, Leo went to the fake Dinosaur...

Boby and Ecy went to the bubbles.

(Boby is trapped inside a giant bubble)

Everyone got to do potions...
(Mia grew a curly tale)

(drinking the potion, Boby grew giant)...

"Flood!"
(Ecy grew wings)...

(Leo grew crazy-long arms)

They went home...

Reading book or newspaper...

Watch TV...

went to their job.
(they are all swinging on trapeze, with the giant face of Boby in the background).

The end.
(By: Lilah B.)

A note: the Museum Lilah mentions is the Montshire Science Museum in Vermont. They have an exhibit right now called A T-Rex Named Sue, and they have permanent exhibits about bees and bubbles (not related). She visited with her Gramma while we were all at Cartoon Camp.

Have you created a Lilah Bean comic? We'd love to share it here!!
This is the first tangled teen I have seen and she makes me think that this is what a Lilah Bean might look like when she grows up! ;-) Oh - and be sure to take note of the Hollibaugh tangled belt! Very nice.

Thank you so very much for your tangle cards and inspirations. I have
laminated them with contact paper and put them on a ring. They are easy
to flip through and gather ideas. I also will be using these in the
summer camp craft class I teach and I am much easier about letting kids use them now.
I wanted to share with you some tangled inspiration I had lately. I was
shopping at Meijers and saw this lovely design your own fashions set
from Disney. There were so many to choose from I had a hard time picking
just one. I finally settled on Tinkerbell but there were also
princesses and Disney villains. [Note, this book is: Style Me Up!]
The girls come just covered with boy shorts and a strapless top. They
give you stencils and stickers to play but I wanted to see what tangled
outfits I could come up with. The stencils help if you are not good at
outlining the idea of a dress or top but I use them rarely and only for a
guideline.

daughter, Calista, is 5-1/2 and uses your app and your tangle cards
intermittently. She has created many tangles for me including this
beautiful tree.

I also plan to teach a little girl who is 5 some of the tangle method

This beach art is like the 3-D illusion sidewalk paintings, but created only with lines in the sand. Pretty amazing?!

Of course, we were so excited, we headed right down to the beach to get artsy!
(Whaaaaat???)Greetings from East Tennessee, where snow is currently pouring down in a speedy swirl! It probably won't accumulate, but since many of us are experiencing snow despite the official arrival of Spring last week, today seems like a great day to share a new tangle with you!

I present...(drumroll, please)...
OFLAARLA!
I will explain this unusual name later.

This is a really fun linear tangle, but when used in multiples, it can become a fill pattern.

The spaces in between strands of offlaarla can be filled in however you like: shade it with pen or pencil, fill it with tipple or auras or pinstripes. Lots of room for creativity with this simple tangle that starts with a series that is reminiscent of Morse code: l — l l l — l l l — lll — l (Dot-dash-dot-dot-dot-dash-dot-dot-dot-dash-dot-dot-dot-dash-dot. )

Ah—and now the snow has stopped (just minutes later!) and the sun is shining again. And we continue with our regularly scheduled season.

I hope that whatever the weather is in your location, you are all healthy and happy and ready to try a new tangle! If you'd like us to share your use of oflaarla here on the ZT for Kids! blog or on our Facebook page, please email me at CZTAmy@gmail.com. Teachers, if you share this tangle with your students, I'd love to see their work!

Happy tangling!
Amy Broady, CZT
Knoxville, TN
I stumbled over this blog post from 2009, on my Beez In The Belfry blog. It was a real flash from the past since it shows where the original Lilah Beans came from! And this is before they were called Lilah Beans. There are some good ideas here and I hope you enjoy reading it.

even kids have patterns! Well... that's another post, but this one is
about finding patterns in the things your kids watch and draw. The image
above is a few pages in my Zentangle sketchbook. The first one is from
an animated movie called "Happily N'ever After". It was kind of dumb,
but the floor of the castle tower had this amazing mosaic pattern on it.
Yeh, my kid thought I was whacked when I said, "Oh rewind that, I need
to draw the floor!!" The sketch I made is a quick, rough one, but I
captured the idea - kind of a Zendala, but more like a game board
spinner. Can't you just imagine this with a spinner? What a great way to
choose what design to use next, eh? So pay more attention to what's on
TV and in catalogs. Kids' clothing catalogs have some great patterns to
tangle.

The second page above shows a bunch of little jellybean
people and creatures that my daughter has been drawing. She's only 2 and
a half now, so I imagine she'll probably have her own line of stamps by
the time she is four too (like my son did). I went through her stack of
crayon drawings and sketched the little creatures into my notebook.
I've been using them - my own interpretation of course! - in some recent
journal entries. I love art journals and writing, but I often have a
really hard time getting myself to actually journal. So I've been using
Zentangles to get started and incorporating quotes or random thoughts,
or even song lyrics, into the design. It's very easy. Just start by
drawing a "string" (guideline) where you want the text to be. You can
even lightly sketch in the words. When you ink them, add little
flourishes, then Zentangle around them.

This
is a page I did in the same journal, while on my recent adventure. (My
mother and I took a train from Boston to Seattle, then a cruise up to
Alaska). The train was incredibly BUMPY! and it was hard to tangle and
write. So, I used that as my inspiration.

Notice that I incorporated
some of the scenery in along the edge. I used the repetition of the
posts and the train cars as a tangle-y pattern. I am really hooked on
Lilah's jelly bean people! I even tangled their hair!
Sandy Steen Bartholomewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02979547420298040620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-85447995222793243.post-44362995369054271732013-12-16T23:08:00.000-05:002013-12-16T23:08:23.367-05:00The Bauble Tree

Have you tangled recently?
Please share your work here!

We would love to feature more student work here on the Zentangle for Kidz website. So here is a new challenge for you to try:

hurry, avreal
ibex, keeko, umble, ahh
huggins, hollibaugh

Opportunity:
zentangle and poetry
pair together well.

Haiku you can do:
tangle names provide the words;
just count syllables.

Seventeen total
syllables are all you need
Five, seven, and five.

Will you try to write
A haiku inspiration
for Zentangle art...

Or perhaps compose
a haiku based on tangles
featured in a tile.

In the example above, I first wrote the poem, using
tangles that started with the letters that spell "haiku." I ended up
having multiple "h" tangles...because they made me happy. Then I drew a string with enough sections to accommodate all of the tangles. For this piece I used an Apprentice<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">™ tile and pen (also known as a
Pigma 05). It felt a bit strange trying to force all of the tangles into
a section ... I had to think about where each one would go in advance,
which is not how I typically work. But it felt good to challenge myself.

Perhaps you are not interested in writing poetry. No worries! If you do not wish to write a haiku, you could choose to draw a Zentangle tile or ZIA (Zentangle-Inspired Artwork) based on someone else's poetry.

An option: tangle
A design based on haiku
that someone else wrote.

I'll post some "Tile Starters" in haiku format soon. I will write some, but I hope that others—students, teachers, parents, etc.—will choose to contribute so that this is an interactive endeavor!

Why haiku you ask?
I give Caroline credit
for this new focus.

For those who don't know, Caroline is my daughter; she's in 10th grade. In Caroline's Zentangle blog that she started in August, she ended her second entry with what she called a haiku of forgiveness for the imperfections in the tile she created:

You may get a smudge,

an unintentional mark,

but it's all okay.

Ever since, haiku structure had been occasionally taking over my thought
process. I have been going through phases in which I can't help but try
to find ways to express ideas with the 5-7-5 syllable structure.

I love haiku. You?
Here's why it appeals to me:
Pure simplicity.

I have chosen haiku because it is short and sweet ... a form of poetry that anyone can enjoy reading and/or writing. No need to rhyme. Haiku is deceptively simple. Often with haiku, ideas have to be cleverly conveyed to fit within the constraints. It's a challenge, but a manageable one. The words of a haiku are like the strokes used to compose a tangle. The strokes that are chosen and the way those strokes are arranged can have a beautiful impact ... in a small space.
while ago I took part in a challenge by Sandy Steen Bartholomew. She is
the author of many books on tangling, but also an illustrator and much
more.
Her daughter created Lilah Bean, a bean-shaped creature in various tangles.
won a prize for the challenge: a set of cards with tangles and the
Kids' edition with Lilah Bean! Of course they had to be played with. The
children made their own Lilah Beans (Bean Blackbird, Maud Bean, Bean
Simone, Lindsay Bean, Eva Bean, Bean Marijn and I of course, made Ellen
Bean).

We gave the Beans a nose and ears.
You can purchase such a card set or read more about Sandy Steen
Bartholomew. Look at her Facebook site: Sandy Steen Bartholomew or shop in the online store.

These were made by the children. Everyone tangled on each drawing in one or more boxes.
(I T T T = Invited To Tangle a Tag.)
Anyone?
The contest ran for several weeks and was supposed to end August 18th. Did you notice that I never posted a winner?

Well, that's because no one wanted to play. I had zero entries. Not a single one. To be honest, I felt like a kid at recess who wants to play a game that nobody else is interested in. But maybe I was just the lone kid left in town when everyone else was on vacation. For whatever reason, I didn't get any tag entries. So I decided to put a freeze on it (Freeze Tag, remember that?!) until after Sandy's Pingline contest. Which was awesome! I am so excited by the artwork that was posted to our Facebook page for that one! Wow. So fun!!! Which is what it's all about.

Here are some of hers. She's not eligible for the contest, however. So NOW is there anyone who will play with me? I
hope so! I am making the new deadline September 15th. You now have
about 2 weeks...I bet you can find a tag to tangle! If you can't find
one, why don't you make one? Just cut up an old cereal box or file
folder...make it a simple shape or a funky one! Punch a hole and add
some string or yarn if you want.

I am going to follow Sandy's lead and invite you to post your entries at the Zentangle for Kidz facebook page. If you do not have a Facebook account, you can still email your entry to me at cztamy@gmail.com, and I will happily post it for you.

Adults are certainly welcome to enter, but only kids will be eligible to win the prize--a pack of Yoga for Your Brain Tangle Cards, Kids Edition. Because I hope to have a range of ages participate, the winner will be based on a random drawing of those who enter.

Please tell me you'll play! Please tell me you're glad that the contest is still going on and you still have a chance to enter! Please send me entries, or post them to our facebook page! It would be fun! And it would mean a lot to me.

Happy Tangling!
For this week's Challenge, I decided to do things a little bit
differently since I'll be away at Art Camp next week. I'm giving two weeks to submit entries and there are two Tangles, one is on the Belfry site and the other is here.

This Challenge features Pingline.
This design developed from a zigzag pattern I saw somewhere that reminded me of penguins holding hands.

You can use the tangle in any way you like and/or you can modify it. Any material or medium is fine as long as you submit a jpeg as your entry. The artwork and all rights remain those of the artist (you) - but by entering, you give me (Sandy) the right to post the work on my sites and to possibly use the piece (with your name) in a future book.

Post your art entry on the ZT for Kidz! Facebook Page.

The winner will receive a pack of my brand new Tangle Cards (not yet available in stores!) and will be chosen in TWO weeks on Thursday, August 22nd, sometime after lunch. ;-)

Anyone, any age, any skill level can enter Challenge #6 - and you can enter even if you have
already won a Challenge on any of my sites.
Let's see what you've got!

What kind of tag will YOU tangle?

Earlier this month I introduced a new contest...yikes! That was almost two weeks ago! You can see that post here. Time really does fly faster in the summer! Have you tangled any tags yet?

I need explain the rules, and I'm eager to find out who's going to play. Will <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">YOU? Please? Everyone is invited...but the prize is only for kids, of course.

It's simple to play; just tangle a tag and take a picture or scan it. Send the jpg file to me at <span style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">cztamy@gmail.com. I will need your first name and last initial, your city & state, and your age in years along with the grade you will be entering this year. For example:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Caroline B. from Knoxville, TN (age 15/grade10).
If you only want to put your state, and not inlcude the city, that's okay, too.

If you are under the age of 13, please check with your parents and make sure you have their permission to enter! If you are 13 and older, you are still welcome to check with your parents, of course. They like it when you tell them what you are up to.

If you are over 18, you are welcome to send me photos of your tangled tags...just note your first name, last initial, city, and that you are an adult. For example:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Amy B. from Knoxville, TN (adult).
These entries are not eligible for the prize.

Next week, you can submit another tangled tag to have another entry. (It has to be a different tag, however--no multiple entries of the same tangled tags.) You can submit one entry per week. Well, you can submit more than that, but only one entry per week will be eligible for the drawing...and only entries from kids. The contest will run through Sunday, August 18th. That's 3 weeks; you can have up to 3 entries that count for the prize (as long as you are not over the age of 18). You are welcome to send more than that!

When you send an entry to me at <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">cztamy@gmail.com, I am assuming that I have the right to publish it here on th Zentangle for Kidz blog and to identify you by your first name and last initial, your location, and your age/grade. I do not know how many I will be publishing--but I'd love to publish a bunch!

Above is a snapshot of some tags I found here at my house...different sizes, colors, and shapes. I know I have others, too...but this is plenty to get me started! I'm excited about the tags with windows...but I have no idea how I am going to tangle them yet!

Please leave me a comment below if you are intending to play TAG! with us...and I'll be checking my email for entries!!!

Let me know if you have any questions....
Happy Tag Tangling!
Tangle what?! A Tag!!!
So what does that mean?

It means it's time for a contest. It's summer, so we should all be having fun, right?! Games are fun...they are playful competitions. So that's what we are going to do here at the ZT for Kidz website...we are going to have a tag contest!

Don't worry; you don't have to run around in the heat. All you have to do is tangle a tag of sorts--a name tag, a gift tag, a luggage tag...all helpful little labels that can be pretty boring--unless you decide to make them exciting. Tangles can do that!

These are a couple of tags I quickly decorated
to attach to some bags of stuff I had to
drop off for Caroline at her school last year.

This idea came to me when I came across some tags that I had decorated very quickly, very simply...not a whole lot of tangling, but still they were more interesting than just a tag with a name on it. Given that this is vacation and summer camp season, I bet there is a lot of luggage tagging going on...and name tagging at camps. It's also birthday season here at the Broady home<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">—in fact Caroline's birthday is TODAY! (Happy 15th Birthday, Caroline!!!), so gift tags are a helpful commodity. Maybe you have a gift that you plan to give someone soon...wouldn't it be nice to have a tangled tag to accompany it? So I urge you to make that tag! Make any tag, as long as it's tangled! And snap a clear photo of it (QUICK--before you give it away, if it's a gift tag!) so you can upload it or email it to me for the contest.

Now I have to confess: I am new to online contests, so I am still trying to figure out the logistics. I will post them later this week. But I thought I'd give you a head start, so you can get started on your Tangled Tag.

One thing I can tell is that there is a realllllllly cool PRIZE involved! Tags are rather like cards, right? Cards with holes and a string or a ribbon. So for the winner of this contest, I promise a pack of the brand-new Yoga for Your Brain Tangle Cards, Kids Edition, compliments of Sandy Steen Bartholomew! (No holes with strings or ribbons in these, though...unless you decide to add them yourself!) These are brand-spankin'-new, hot-off-the-press, and not available in stores yet. I was lucky enough to get to preview them when I met Sandy at CZT training in Providence last month, and I am thrilled that she offered me a pack as a prize for this contest. Thank you, Sandy!

Tags come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. For this contest, you can enhance your tangled tag with markers, colored pencils, paints, and more! But for these tags, the tangles are the most important feature. That's why we're here, right?

I can't wait to see what you come up with!

One more thing: this contest is aimed at tanglers ages 18 and under--if you are a parent, a teacher, or an adult of any kind, you may submit a tangled tag for fun, and I hope you will, but you are not eligible to win the prize pack of Tangle Cards. I'm sorry...but don't be mad<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">—you grown-ups can enter Sandy's series of contests, and maybe win a pack of cards from her! Here's a link to her blog post in which she explains her contest series. (Pssst....Kids! You can enter those contests, too!)
Like Harry Potter or, say, Lilah from Zentangle for Kidz?

Sometimes you know such things really can't happen. Harry Potter is fiction; you can't hang out with him in real life. But sometimes such wishes do come true! I have experienced it myself. Over the past few days, I have been hanging out with none other than one of my heroes, Sandy Steen Bartholomew! THE Sandy Steen Bartholomew who is responsible for this website, the Zentangle for Kidz book, and a slew of other Zentangle books that started me on my Zentangle journey and changed my life. Seriously! And even though Lilah isn't here, her big brother Alex is. He's the cartoon kid wrapped up in the snake at the top of the blog page. He's older and taller in real life, though, and did not bring the snake with him, of course.

We are in Providence, Rhode Island for the eleventh CZT Training Seminar. My daughter Caroline just earned her CZT certification. So did Alex. There are now two teenage CZTs on the loose!
(Actually, there is one other teen CZT from a previous seminar. Maria's great-nephew Joe McCuine was the first teenager to get certified.)
The past few days have been quite a treat. We spent two long days traveling to get here (ROAD TRIP!), and were rather tired when we arrived, but we have enjoyed a wonderful experience and met some incredibly talented, fun, and kind people here at the training seminar. There are now over 100 new CZTs in the world...some who travelled far further than we did! We have met people from Ecuador, Sweden, Belgium, South Africa, Taiwan, India, and Ireland. Not to mention the folks from all over the U.S., including many who traveled from the West Coast. It would interesting to know the grand total of miles traveled by everyone who came here to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher!

It's a very rare privilege for Alex and Caroline to have attended this seminar. Like all the adults that were here for the same purpose, they both worked hard to learn as much as possible about the Zentangle method...they practiced tangles for hours and hours, and they each developed a tangle of their own. They spent a lot of time talking with the other new CZTs, which included people from a wide variety of backgrounds: professional artists, teachers and professors, research scientists, musicians, counselors, a handwriting analyst, a librarian, just to list a few.

There is too much to write in just one post, so I will be sharing more later. In the mean time, happy tangling! I encourage you to remember the Zentangle motto: "Anything is possible . . . one stroke at a time."
Occasionally though a parent has difficulty seeing how it applies as more than just an activity to keep kids busy. I have to admit that I'm not that articulate when this happens. I have a really hard time understanding when someone doesn't value art for its own sake and find myself just staring at them in silence, mouth slightly agape.

I recently received a great example though from my 11-year-old that I can now talk about when necessary.

Mia was studying different cultures in one of her classes in Middle school. She and her partner were assigned to write a story based on mythology from India. Part of the assignment was to illustrate the story. The village she drew came straight from zentangling! Yay! She drew houses but just drew them bigger for her assignment. Here are two pictures, one closer up of the art work. Her teacher loved the art.

I wanted to share with you some examples of the pattern Rain done by K-6th graders using black sensi pens and colored pencils. This was the third class in a four class series and they were so excited to be able to use color for the first time! We only used black ink on white paper for the first two classes (I'll post those examples soon!). I love that there are so many wonderful possibilities using only one pattern. I enjoy making monotiles (using only one pattern) when I am learning a new pattern. I hope you'll try this one soon!
